She coaches a winning high school dance team with the same passion, tenacity and fun that has made her incredibly succssful in her recruiting career. Let’s hear what Tonay has to say about recruitment and working for Advanced RPO.
What’s wonderful about working for Advanced RPO?
So many things; the leadership and the chance to be a part of something expanding and feeling like you are making a difference is first and foremost.
What do you enjoy about recruiting? What drew you to this field?
I was introduced to recruiting while working in retail. I was told that I was good with people and I have a knack for making them listen. On my first day of work in my new position as a Recruiting Associate, I was hung up on three times and discouraged. I quickly learned that cold calling was a numbers game so I structured my day around hitting the numbers and remembering the more calls I made the better my chances. I am not sure what drew me to the field but what has kept me here is helping people.
What do you think makes an exceptional RPO recruiter?
Knowing your client. We are tier-one, the first person the candidate speaks to and potentially the reason they are interested or not.
How do you see the recruitment marketplace changing right now? What do you think is one of the most important trends in recruiting?
I know people have choices these days, it is very competitive. I think the interview process is huge; it has to work for the client by identifying a good candidate and ultimately a hire, but it also has to be a positive experience for the candidate.
What advice do you have for anyone who is looking for a new job?
Covet what you want, focus on the needs and requirements of the job and make sure you are working towards that. There is no room for being all over the place because you must know what you are talking about, which is why we do behavioral interviewing. Because I am a high school coach, I have watched my young ladies grow up, many of them have their own families now. During their career searches, they tend to get frustrated after multiple interviews and rejections. I remind them that they are on the right track especially if they are consistently getting to the final interview. If it is down to them and one other person and it is clear they can do the job, it then comes down to “fit”. Are they the right fit for the company, dept., culture, etc. I also remind them that the position that is mean for them will come — what is meant to be will be!
